Bloggers Like Me: The Atlanta Meet Up

This Sunday I got the opportunity to meet up with some pretty fabulous Atlanta bloggers. We are all members of a supportive bloggers group called Bloggers Like Me. I got a chance to meet some of my favorite bloggers and do a little socializing. Everyone was so positive and kind. It's refreshing to be in a room full of women without any kind of tension.

The event had some amazing sponsors. Everyone received a piece of jewelry from Mimi Boutique. My favor bag had these amazing gold ear rings inside. Right up my alley. I love a gold ear ring.

The sweets table was full of temptation. The spread was nice. I'm more of a salty snack girl but the cake pops by Popularity Sweets were so yummy! I had a chance a to speak with Kiwi, the head baker in charge at Popularity Sweets and she was just as sweet as her treats. Check out her Facebook page to learn more about her goodies. They would be perfect for a  baby or bridal shower or bachelorette party.

We gathered at Mimi's Cafe near Perimeter Mall in Atlanta. I had always heard great things about the food at Mimi's. I enjoyed a salad during the event and it was delish!

Skin Deep

I have been fed up with my skin for quite sometime. After going to the dermatologist and trying several different things I finally caved and headed to my local Ulta. At first I thought I would try ProActive because the commercials are so darn convincing. When I got to the mall I learned that all of the little ProActive kiosks had been replaced with little ProActive vending machines. That's not happening. I'm not swiping my debit card at a vending machine. The next thing I know I'll have charges on my card for everyone's ProActive. That would happen to me. Then to top it off the product probably wouldn't even work for me but everyone else with free ProActive would have amazing skin.

Anyways, I went to Ulta to see what my options were. The esthetician sat down with me for about 15 minutes. She looked at my skin, made some notes (which always makes you feel like you're really more messed up than you are, haha) and helped me select a new skin routine. It's the dermalogica oily skin kit. It was on sale for $35 and I'm hoping it lives up to the hype Lindsay (the esthetician) gave it. I'll share updates on how it's working for me. Has anyone tried this brand before? What were your results?

Stylish Saturday: My First Blogger Event

Well the event was actually on Sunday but I had to plan my outfit the night before. I was trying to decide between a black and polka dot dress and a coral and black stripe Cynthia Rowley top with black shorts. After much feedback from my trusted circle I decided to go with the polka dot dress.

Now. This event was in Atlanta which means that great style was to be expected. I knew all of the ladies would look amazing and I was right. I'll be doing a recap of the event later today. It was so much  fun! Some of the pics below are a little dark. Sorry about that.

Hurry Up and Wait

I probably don't need to remind you of this but as you may recall we're moving. Now. I would like to consider myself an Army Wife vet. Meaning that I've moved several times and I'm very accustomed to relocating often. With that said. Every move presents a challenge. The challenge we are facing this time is looking for a place to call home.

We have never been in a situation like this before. We have always lived on post so we've never really had to look for other options. I know that some families don't like living on post. Their reasons for not liking on post housing is too long for me to list here. I've heard everything from not having enough space to not wanting nosey neighbors. I would agree that sometimes you end up in a tiny house, but I've never had the nosey neighbor problem. In fact, I've always had great neighbors.

This move is different because there is a wait list due to supply and demand. We're on two wait lists for two different installations. One house would be 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and the other house would be a smaller two bed two bath historical home that has been completely renovated. We actually lived in the smaller historical home during our last assignment in San Antonio. Either house would be fine with me. I just want a street address. I know that there are some military wives out there who will read this and think I'm "whining" but I don't really care. We all have moments of being overwhelmed by this lifestyle and right now I'm having my moment.

I know that everything will eventually work out but it's so hard waiting. Do you remember my post about patience? Yeah. I'm still working on that. In the mean time we'll be hanging out in Atlanta with my family until our number is called. I'm just so ready to get settled. It's just so hard for me to believe that the wait list hasn't moved at all this summer. I can't believe the lady on the phone said they haven't contacted anyone on the wait list and that there are actually houses available. I can't believe she said that, ha ha! Don't say that to a woman that wants a street address. It's not cool. There's so much hurry up and wait. And we're waiting. Not exactly patiently but waiting nonetheless.

Stylish Saturday: First Thrifting Trip

This edition of Stylish Saturday is a little different. Instead of showing you all what I wore I'm going to share with you some of the things I found while out thrifting. First of all can I just say that thrifting was such an adrenaline rush! I don't think I've ever felt that way while shopping. Well. Maybe. But not in a very long time. I had so much fun. My Mom went with me and Savannah slept in her stroller the entire time. I didn't go too crazy.

I set a twenty dollar budget. I mainly wanted to find dresses. Instead of looking at everything (and trust me there was tons to look at) I went right to the dresses and focused on those racks. That way I wouldn't be tempted to buy anything else. I found three dresses that I really loved. The first was a chambray wrap dress from The Loft.

The next was a gorgeous long sleeve Lanvin (yep you read that right) silk shirt dress. It fits so well and I am in love. I can not believe that I lucked up on something like this on my first thrifting trip. Since I am in the process of moving I won't be wearing this dress until I am reunited with the perfect pair of shoes for the dress.

This is a picture of Lanvin labels. I googled Lanvin labels just to be sure that my dress was legit. My dress is on the left and an internet image is on the right.

lanvin

The last dress I found was a striped dress with a great cut. On the hanger it didn't look like much but since I liked the colors so much I decided to try it on. I'll admit it's a little snug but once I quit drinking so much soda it'll fit perfect. It kind of reminds me of a pack of chewing gum, haha!

I have been so inspired by all of the fashion (and non fashion) bloggers that thrift. I would secretly be amazed (and jealous) of all the cute stuff they were finding. I plan to go thrifting again really soon. Oh, by the way, I found all three of my dresses for seventeen dollars. Love. Sorry that last dress isn't right side up. My soldier gifted me with a Mac yesterday and I have no clue on how to work it yet. So you may see some posts with weird layouts until I get my life back together, haha! Taking an Apple class isn't exactly at the top of my to-do list right now.  Bare with me!

Little Woods Birthday Brownies

Next month is a huge month for our family. Not only are we moving, but we will be celebrating Savannah and the soldier's birthday. I wanted to pass along this awesome brownie recipe from my friends at Little Woods. It's a great way to make birthdays a little extra special. You know I love trying a brownie recipe so I definitely be trying this one!

Birthday Surprise
Nothing beats the smell of food fresh from the oven. Whether it’s a succulent roast
turkey on Christmas Day, or a rich fruity Simnel cake at Easter, the special moments
on our calendar are marked every year by particularly special recipes.

One of the most important days on anyone’s calendar is a loved one’s birthday.
Whether you’re celebrating another year for a child, parent or partner, this
chocolate concoction is sure to make their special day even better.
All time favourite chocolate brownies:

Ingredients

140g unsalted butter
85g plain flour
200g light muscovado sugar (this is usually available from specialty stores, but can be
substituted with brown sugar if you’re unable to find it)
200g dark chocolate
2 eggs, plus 1 additional egg yolk
2 tsp vanilla extract
Sifted cocoa powder or icing sugar, to dust
75g walnuts, chopped and lightly toasted

Method

• For newer makes of oven, such as a Littlewoods Hotpoint cooker, preheat to
160°C.

• Select an 18cm square cake pan and grease and line with greaseproof paper.

• Place a bowl over simmering water (be careful not to let it get wet) and melt
the butter and chocolate.

•Remove from the heat and cool slightly. Combine by beating the vanilla, a
pinch of salt, and the sugar.

• Whisk the eggs in one at a time, taking time to beat well. Add the additional
egg yolk and flour, beating until smooth.

• Add the walnuts and spread evenly by folding. Pour the mixture into the pre-
prepared pan and smooth the surface.

• Bake for 40-45 minutes.

• If you prefer softer brownies, you can always remove them a little earlier.
Just be sure to pop a skewer into the brownie centre to check the batter is
completely cooked.

• Once the brownies have cooled, turn them onto a wire rack or clean surface
and peel away the paper lining.

• Cut into neat squares and dust with icing sugar, or cocoa for a more bitter
chocolate flavour.

• Enjoy!

Does your loved one have a particularly sweet tooth? Why not transform the classic
brownie into an even more decadent treat? Just add a few more ingredients to spoil
them rotten with Rocky Road Brownies.

Simply add to the recipe above:

•A handful of marshmallows – the more colours the better.
¼ cup of unsalted peanuts as a substitute for the walnuts.

•Brownies will keep for around three days in an airtight container, or can be frozen
for a few months. But we’re sure the family will love the brownies so much, they’ll
all be gone before you have a second to think about storage!

So Chic: My First Blog Award

Jasmyne over at A Fisher's Wife was nice enough to award me with the Liebster award. This is my first blogger award and I am so excited! Now. To be honest. I had already completed a great Liebster award post. For some reason the layout kept acting crazy and then the worst thing ever happened...my post disappeared. Hopefully, this recreation will be just as good as the original. Let's Go! Round two!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Once this super chic award has been given to you you are challenged to share eleven random facts about yourself. You then have to answer eleven questions from the blogger that gave you the award. Then you have to pick eleven bloggers to share the award with, and come up with eleven questions for them to follow. Now do you understand why I'm so upset that my other post vanished? Haha!

Eleven Random Facts About Me

1. I got my first job at fourteen. I worked for Chick Fil-A.
2. My first car was a Pontiac Sunbird. It was totalled in a head on collision three weeks after I purchased it.
3. I know how to drive a stick. My Sunbird and the car that I got after that ('86 Acura Integra) were both sticks.
4. I got married at the ripe old age of 21. My husband was 25.
5. In the forth grade I broke my femur bone. I was in a body cast for the majority of the school year and had to be home schooled. My fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Jane Timmerman was nice enough to home school me. Good teachers are everything.
6. I have a tattoo of my husband's name on the inside of my wrist. I got the tattoo during my lunch break one day at work. It now hides beneath all of my bracelets and bangles.
7. On my first date with my husband I fell down. I completely busted my butt in front of an entire movie theatre. Since we were seeing Undercover Brother my fall was probably the best thing that theatre saw during that hour and a half. :-)
8. I have four tattoos.
9. I got my navel pierced while I was in college but it didn't stick. The belly piercer said that my stomach was too flat and that my muscles rejected the piercing. I wish I had that problem now!
10. I am addicted to green tea, Sargento Pepper Jack Cheese sticks and Snickers.
11. While in college my dream was to become a news anchor. I'm so glad dreams change.

Eleven Questions from Jasmyne

My biggest role model would have to be any woman who is successful at what she does. Any woman that is living her life with purpose is something that I look up to.
2. What is your dream car?
My dream car would be any luxury SUV with all the bells and whistles. I currently drive an Acura MDX and I love it. I think I'll always be an Acura girl, but if you give me a Range Rover Sport I'm not going to turn you down. The new Infiniti JX is pretty nice too!
3. What is the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you?
I got extremely sick once after taking a laxative. That is all you need to know. It involved a trip to the ER that was not pretty. At all. My husband still picks on me about it.
4. What do you consider your greatest strength?
My greatest strength would is my work ethic. No matter what I am doing I always give one hundred percent.
5. What are some of your pet peeves?
People being late, Getting interrupted when I'm talking and bad customer service.

10. Do you speak any other languages?
I do not speak any official foreign languages but I happen to speak my toddler's language very well. I understand everything she says.
11. What is considered a perfect day for you?
A perfect day for me would consist of lots of family time. An outing, dinner and some play time at home followed by Savannah going to be at seven thirty. My soldier and I could watch a movie and hang out before deciding to call it a night. Call me crazy but that's a perfect day to me...

Here are eleven blogs that I love. All of them are deserving of the Liebster Award:

My New Look 3

Just wanted to share that I finally got my box braids up into a bun! It's a little more Janelle Monae than I think I wanted but I love it! Next time I'm going to focus on positioning the bun a little further back. What do you think?

Don't Judge...

Before I was a mother I think I was quite ignorant (and maybe a little judgmental) about what it takes to have a small person with you all the time. I was like any other young professional. "Why doesn't she tell little Matthew to get down?" "Why doesn't she just tell little Suzy to be quiet?" "Hmm mm little Matthew needs a spanking." I could go on forever about how I judged parents while their kids were going crazy in Target or at a restaurant. I could even give you some recent examples.

The difference is that now I tend to question the parents behavior less and the child's behavior more. Savannah will be two in September and I think I have learned so much more about children and their behavior. I know now that when little Matthew is going ape shizz in Target it's not because he's a bad kid. Little Matthew is probably hungry, bored or in need of a good nap. Little Matthew may not be a troubled kid and his mother is probably not a push over. They're just having a bad day.

When I hear little Suzy screaming her head off at dinner I no longer assume that little Suzy is a spoiled brat. I first assume that little Suzy is teething or overtired. You know. All those "mommy" words that get tossed around when a kid is in distress. Don't worry. I use them too. After all that diagnosing, I then feel bad for little Suzy's Mom. Because like most Moms I've been there. I've had Savannah not want to sit still for dinner. Or sit at the table period. And while she's never really thrown an all out temper tantrum in public I could only imagine how irritating and exhausting it could be. I use those two words because that it's exactly how those situations are.

We all practice patience, get to-go boxes and make a dash for the nearest exit in those situations. Mothers have so much more in common than I think I would have ever imagined. Since becoming a Mom I am way more understanding about what it takes to get through the tough days. And while some kids may be little bite sized jerks sometimes, I know now that it's not always the Mom's fault. I have a new level of understanding and compassion. Has your perspective about the mother-child dynamic changed since becoming a Mom? How?

Sunday Social ~ All about Food

I am linking up with Sunday Social again. I think her questions are always so fun! Feel free to go to her site, grab the button and play along! My husband's Fantasy Football draft starts soon so I'll be away from my computer until that's over. He gets so serious about it too. Savannah and I will probably continue getting organized for the movers until we go out for dinner. I can't believe this is our last Sunday here, time is certainly flying!!

Sunday Social

1. If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
That's tough. I think I'll have to go with sushi and Chinese/Japanese food.

2. What's your guilty pleasure/comfort food?
My guilty pleasure would be a Snickers bar and an ice cold Coke. My comfort food would be homemade mac n cheese.
3. What's the weirdest/craziest thing you've ever eaten?
I tried octopus once and it wasn't that bad. Very chewy!
4. What foods do you avoid at all costs?
Chitterlings, because I hate the way they smell when being prepped. I also can not stand boxed mac n cheese, sorry Kraft.
5. What meal reminds you of your childhood?
There are so many. My Mom is an excellent cook. Beef stroganoff is definitely at the top of the list. I would also have to say homemade burgers. My Mom makes the best. Lastly, I would have to say Chewy Cake. It is delicious!
6. Share one of your favorite recipes and the story behind it.
I'm gonna go with Chewy Cake again. It changes lives, haha!

Stylish Saturday: Paisley Print Top

Happy Saturday! For this edition of Stylish Saturday I wanted to show you all one of my favorite shirts. I've had it for about three years or so. I found it while shopping in NYC for my 25th birthday! (I know, you're doing the math...yes I'm 28 and I'm not mad about it, LOL) This button up is so lightweight and comfy. It is slightly sheer. I love the paisley print and the long shirt tails.

I originally purchased the shirt to wear as a swimsuit cover up. Could you imagine? This shirt over a white bikini, sleeves rolled up, gold accessories and a fedora! Love. On this particular day I was headed to a play date with Savannah. I paired it with some berry colored jean leggings. Georgia was getting rained on that day so I felt okay being all covered up, especially since the shirt is so light and breezy.  What do you think?

If you haven't already joined my instagram party click the button on the right or search for me from your mobile, @chicsahm. Have a great weekend everyone!

My New Look Part 2

I wanted to do a quick update or review on what I think about my braids so far. Since this is my first time getting braids done I'm not quite sure I knew what to expect. While I am very happy with the way they look I'm not so sure I was prepared for the way they feel. These suckers are heavy, long and in the way. Maybe it's because I'm use to having my little curly fro, but I can not imagine wearing my braids down. I've been trying to pin them back in the front and I've attempted to do a bun several times with no luck. I'm still very happy with my decision to get them but I'm still trying to get use to them. The next time I have my braids done I will definitely go with a smaller box braid.

Anyway. Here are some of the styles I've done so far. Nothing extreme. I've been getting tons of compliments on the color of the hair. It is a number 30 from the Kanekelon line.

i think this ponytail makes me look sixteen. not to mention my husband said it reminded him of "Shanaynay" from Martin.

Love

I have had a lot of different things on my mind lately. I will eventually blog about all of them soon. One of the things that I've been thinking about the most is my husband. His determination, patience, sense of humor and his love for me and Sav. I have found it to be so amazing how he has changed over the years that I've known him. As a result our relationship has changed too.

I met my husband in April of 2002. I was attending a minority weekend orientation at our college, East Carolina University, when he introduced himself to me. It was like he popped up out of no where. We instantly had a friendly connection. A chemistry that could only be described as comfortable. We had a comfortable chemistry. I felt like I had known him my whole life. Like we had been friends for years. We dated through out college. Like some college couples do we broke up and got back together a few times. I like to think that that's part of our fun past. We still talk about those days. There's his version. My version. And the truth is probably some where in the middle.

Anyway. When I think about what he was like at 21 I would have never guessed that he would be the man he is today. The college frat boy that I knew would never be a home body that enjoys singing the Fresh Beat Band's "Great Day". Love and marriage has certainly changed him. It has changed us. For the better. We are happier. Funnier. And crazier (in a good way).

I am so thankful for my husband. Grateful. I am still enchanted by his smile. And his eyes. He still gives me those butterflies I had as a college freshman. In December we will celebrate seven years of marriage. I feel so blessed. Our journey has been love filled. One of the greatest things about marriage is that it provides you with the opportunity to fall in love for the rest of your life. Because of Him and him I'm still falling. And I'm so grateful for that...

I'm Back! Let the Countdown Begin!

Okay. So I'm back from my trip to visit my in-laws. We had a great time. The visit went by way too fast. I am so glad that I have in-laws that are a joy to be around. Sometimes I hear horror stories about mother-in-laws and how families don't get along. I'm so glad that that's not my story. My MIL and I get along great. We're so different but at the same time we're so much a like. Anyway, I'm so happy that we got a chance to have some real family time with them before we move halfway across the country again.

Now. About this move that I should be preparing for. Can we talk about how I haven't really prepared for it at all? I did manage to throw away some beauty products that were expired but that's just about it. I have so much organizing to do before the movers come. They come next week. I don't know why I even stress over getting organized because when they show up they divide and conquer. One minute my house is home with everything in its place. A few hours later everything is boxed up and ready to be loaded on a truck. And by everything I mean everything. They'll box up your trash if you aren't paying attention.

So our countdown has officially begun. We'll be bouncing around, living the nomadic lifestyle for the next couple weeks. I'm excited about spending some time with my parents before we leave. I'll get to make more Chow Chow and we plan to get a couple sewing projects done too. I'll post about those projects soon! Then we'll get to hang out in Atlanta for a bit before finally leaving for Texas. I love visiting my parents in Atlanta. While there I plan to meet up with some other bloggers and go on my first thrifting trip. If we're still in town I'm going to my first blogger event too. So exciting! This blog has been such a blessing to me and I want to make sure that I network and connect with other chic bloggers while I can. Just talking about everything I'll be doing is making me exhausted.

Whew. Well. I'll be posting all about my upcoming adventures as they happen. Oh. And I have a somewhat funny story to share with you. It will be in the next post about my braids.

My New Look

While I'm away visiting my mother in law I got a new look. I had been thinking about getting box braids for awhile. I'm so glad I decided to get them. Here are some pics that I snapped during the braiding process, right after my appointment and the next day. I'll posts new pics as I change them up. I plan to pin them up in different styles. What do you guys think of my new look? Any style or maintenance recommendations?
